Along with telling us a bit about yourself, please let us know any background you might have in web design. Do you consider yourself a web design novice? Intermediate? Professional? Inquiring instructors and fellow students want to know!
ProfilesJim Collier. I am your humble instructor. As you have seen, or will see, on our course web site, I've taught a version of this course off and on over the last ten years at both Tech and the University of Massachusetts. Let me skip the academic stuff and give you a bit of personal background. I'm married — my wife's name is Monique. We met in Durham, North Carolina. We have a cat, Spenser. I was born in Richmond and went to the Steward School and to Douglas Freeman High School. I have family all over the state — in Virginia Beach, Richmond, Lynchburg and Harrisonburg. Good friends live in DC. A few hobbies: I play mandolin — more off than on. I like
"newgrass" music and go to the occasional festival. I've been know to attend a tailgate or two at a Tech football game. Fun fact: I attended the
1986 Peach Bowl in Atlanta when Chris Kinzer made "the kick." I love the academic life — reading, writing, teaching and debating ideas. And I really like teaching this course because you get to make something that other people can see, use and enjoy. Welcome to the course.
Amy Gay. This is the only class I'm taking this summer session. I'm also working as an RA for the summer, and I'm living in Vawter, which is kind of gross--it's normally an all male dorm. My family lives in Woodbridge, VA, though I consider myself to be from Richmond, but I really wanted to stay in Blacksburg this summer. So, I signed up for this class and Modern English Linguistics for next semester in order to be eligible to work as a summer RA, since that covers my housing. It also counts toward my Professional Writing major, so taking it may help leave room for classes in my minor: Classical Studies. A few of my interests are: tennis, reading, and listening to music. I like a fairly wide range of music. I like rock, hip hop, electronica, lots of alternative styles, some rap, and some techno. Country music is pretty much the only type of music I really don't like.
As far as web design, I have no experience. I have experience with graphic and layout design, and I used to work as a designer for the Collegiate Times, so I'm hoping this will at least help me with the design aspect of this course.
Nathan Denny: I just graduated from Tech with a degree in Music, and I’m taking the summer and next fall to finish my Professional Writing degree. I’m a sax player in the Marching Virginians and I sing in an acapella group called Juxtaposition. I’m from Virginia Beach, and I’m here right now for the summer, waiting tables. Some of my interests are soccer, volleyball, swimming, writing music, and traveling. My favorite type of music is probably bluegrass—I’ve been trying to teach myself the fiddle for the past year with almost no success.
I have NO experience with web design, which is one of the reasons I am taking this course. I’m sure it is an important skill to have, and I need any amount of training I can get.
Jerran Anderson: I am a rising senior here at Virginia Tech. I am a military brat who has lived in Texas, Virginia, and New Jersey and have no regrets. I like to travel, listen to music, and play basketball. I am a manager for the men's bball team here also. I have a bit of background in web design, mainly with WYSIWYG editors just because HTML could have been made simpler, if only I invented it. I have a blog, which you can find at http://sportswowisdom.blogspot.com/. It's a little new but I like to write so you can read my ideas if you so choose. Web design is exciting to me although I doubt I ever could invent those brilliant flash pages that others invent but I hope to gain some more knowledge on how to design so I can make my own website and help my sister with hers, I'll spare you the link.
P.S. Add me on
Facebook!
Kathleen DeSouza: You can call me Katie for short. I’m technically a senior here at Tech (hoping to graduate early in December). I figured if I took this course now, I’d lighten my work load so that I could breathe a little in the fall. I’m an English major with two concentrations: Professional and Creative Writing. Originally, I wanted to be just a Creative Writing Minor; then again, seeing as I don’t want to live in a cardboard box all my life, I realized that adding Professional Writing would be a better career choice in the long run. I love to write poetry, children’s stories, and short fiction; however, I am currently doing quite a bit of pw stuff. I work at Casanel Vineyards (which is my family’s farm/vineyard) as a wine schlepper— basically I talk about the wine, its history, and share funny family anecdotes to help boost my tips (which go toward my tuition and not my passion (shoes!), naturally). I recently wrote our employee training manual (basically a “how to schlep wine” book) and I’ve written our wine labels. Aside from writing, I really love animals—I have a cat named Cinza, which is Portuguese for “ashes.” When I first got her she was a little gray fuzzball and looked like she had been rolling around in a fireplace (which she’s like to do). I also have two Labradors, a black one named Mr. Darcy and a yellow one named Mr. Bingley (both very akin to their Jane Austen counterparts). Oh, and then there’s my oldest pet, Candida. I don’t know where the name comes from… but she’s 20 years old (mind-boggling!)
Yeah, so about the web designing part… I have absolutely noooooo experience with web design. Technology and I don’t get along very well, but I’m hoping to remedy this problem by taking this course. I really, really don’t want to live in a cardboard box, as mentioned, so having basic web design knowledge would definitely help me out in the real world.
Katelyn Webster Most of my friends call me "Kate." I'm an English major; Professional Writing is my concentration. I'm taking this class online so that I'm able to be home for the summer. I'm one of six kids so the house is very crowded at times, but I'm glad to be home. I love to read, run, and spend time with family and friends. Also, I love playing board games with my brothers (they even beat me sometimes!). When I'm not surrounded by my three younger brothers and my two sisters (one older, one younger), I spend my days as a Recreation Leader for James City-County Parks and Recreation. The ages of the kids at my site range from 5 to 11. Not only do I get to play gym games (they beat me, too) and make crafts all day, but I also get paid to do it! More than that though, the kids bring me joy, and I love my job more than anything. So as far as this class goes, I have no experience with web design. Though while it looks challenging, it appears to have its share of real-world benefits.
Stephanie Bridgeman. I am a senior double majoring in Engineering Science and Mechanics and Interdisciplinary Studies with minors in Professional Writing, Mathematics, and Business Leadership. I'm home taking online classes for the first summer session, and then I'm heading back up to Blacksburg to take courses over second summer session. I had already had three minors, but just decided to double major, so I'm hoping that taking courses over the summer will lighten my load in the coming year. I'm from New Martinsville, WV, a small town that I doubt anyone's ever heard of. I enjoy reading, hanging out with friends, painting my nails, and music. I'm president of my sorority, Tau Beta Sigma, which is the band service sorority and am busy with planning all sorts of activities for band camp and the Marching Virginians for the coming year.
I have some experience with web design. Last summer, I participated in a study abroad trip to Europe through the College of Engineering. Part of the coursework was to design a website documenting our travels. The link to my site is:
http://www.rsap.eng.vt.edu/bridgeman/. We had to design the site using CSS, and we actually used a lot of the W3 School tutorials. I'm also the webmaster for my sorority. I'm working on completely re-vamping our site right now, but it's still a work in progress. Here's the working link as of now
http://www.vttbs.netne.net. We want to finish the site before we upload it to the Music Department website, but it's still got a long way to go. If anyone has any suggestions for the site, please let me know.
Brittany Beerse. I am a senior as I said in the thread I added below... clearly I was not quite sure where to start typing when I got to this page. I am taking this course our the summer along with a course in economics to complete my existing requirements to graduate. I decided to take this course in particular to get experience in web design to use for future career endeavors. I hope to some day be a creative director, and I know majoring in English does not usually lead students in that direction, but I unfortenately did not realize what I wanted to do until the summer after my junior year leaving very little time to switch majors. However I plan to take classes on the side in design, and web design hoping to some how work may way up into my dream job. As of now though I am eager to learn web design skills, but have little to none currently.
James Dodson. Call me Jimmy. This class is one of two that I am taking in the first summer session. I just walked in the graduation ceremony and started searching for jobs. I have no experience in Web Design but plan on learning a lot. Last semester, I took a class in which I got to work with Photoshop and other Adobe programs. Digital Literary Culture gave me the opportunity to read works I thought were pretty wild. I also got into some real weird techno, like Dan Deacon, edIT, and others. So although I have no experience in design, I am at least embracing the cyber world more everyday. Lookin’ forward to working with everyone.
Craig Harmon. My name is Craig Harmon. I have a lot of experience in Web Design, and I have been working as a professional designer for roughly a year now; I'm currently in the process of starting my own multimedia business. I love learning new things about design and just because I'm already experienced in this field, it doesn't mean that I can't learn a lot in this course. I love business and technology and two summers ago I ran a small recording studio in a shed I built in my backyard for my summer job. My main professional goal is to be self-employed in something that I love to do. I'm an English (PW) major and I need two more summer courses to be able to (officially) graduate. On a more personal side, I am an only child, I live in Northern Virginia, I love the Sopranos, the Office, Chipotle, and I'm a user.
Kirstie Cook: I'm going to be a senior and my major is Food Science with minors in Chemistry and Professional Writing. I have a little bit of experience in web site design from a digital art class I took here when I was a freshman. Like a lot of you I am also into music (I play the piano). I love going to shows - I'm known for making 8 hour round-trips during the week to follow bands around...I'm kind of dreading graduating, just because I'm going to miss the super flexible schedule that lets me do that. I'm not sure what I want to do career-wise, but I'd love to be self-employed and able to travel. I'm planning on either grad school (to put off the real world), or just packing it all up and heading to California. Thanks to everyone for posting their profile. A interesting group, indeed — possessing a wide range of experience.
